Before heading out to enjoy the world-class redfish and speckled trout bite on the Texas Coastal Bend, making sure you have the proper licensing is an essential first step. Whether you are a local Texas resident or visiting Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, or Rockport from out of state, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) requires anglers to carry a valid fishing license. Who Needs a Fishing License?

In the state of Texas, any individual who is 17 years of age or older must possess a valid fishing license to fish in public waters. This rule applies equally to both Texas residents and non-resident travelers. If you are booking a guided trip with us, every actively participating adult in your group will need to have their own license ready before we leave the dock.

Saltwater vs. Freshwater Rules

Because Murky Water Charter operates entirely in the coastal bays, shallow flats, and estuaries around Aransas Pass, a standard freshwater license will not cover your trip. You must purchase a package that specifically includes a Saltwater Endorsement. The standard Saltwater Package includes this endorsement, as well as a Red Drum tag, which legally allows you to keep one oversized trophy redfish per year—a great bonus when targeting big bull reds in our local channels. If you plan to fish both inland lakes and the coast during your Texas visit, you can opt for an All-Water Package instead.

Current License Pricing for Residents and Non-Residents

TPWD offers a variety of license packages depending on where you live and how long you plan to fish. For Texas residents, the standard annual Saltwater Package costs $35, while the All-Water Package is $40. If you are visiting from out of state, the non-resident annual Saltwater Package is $63, and the non-resident All-Water Package is $68. If you are only in town for a quick getaway, the One-Day All-Water License is an excellent, cost-effective choice at just $11 for residents and $16 for non-residents.

Special Exemptions: Youth, Seniors, and Veterans

Texas provides several great exemptions to make fishing more accessible. Youth anglers under the age of 17—both residents and non-residents—can fish completely free of charge and do not need a license. For Texas residents aged 65 and older, TPWD offers a discounted Senior Saltwater Package for just $17 (or $22 for Senior All-Water). Additionally, Texas resident active-duty military personnel and disabled veterans may qualify for a Super Combo Hunting and All-Water Fishing Package at no cost, provided they meet the official disability criteria.
